It’s August in Central Texas. The sun is blazing, the temperature is pushing toward triple digits, and your air conditioner seems like it hasn’t shut off since breakfast.

At some point, you may start wondering, “Is my AC supposed to be running this much?”

The short answer is that on extremely hot Texas days, long AC cycles can be completely normal. But there is a difference between an air conditioner working hard because of the heat and one running constantly because something is wrong.

It can be tempting.

Your home is 78 degrees, so you lower the thermostat from 74 to 68 hoping the AC will cool faster.

Unfortunately, that’s not how most residential air conditioners work.

Setting the thermostat lower doesn’t make your AC produce colder air or cool the house faster. It simply tells the system to keep running until it reaches the new setting.

During extreme heat, that may mean even more runtime without making your home noticeably more comfortable.

Temperature is only part of indoor comfort.

High humidity can make your home feel warmer even when the thermostat shows a reasonable temperature.
